Trending Health Food

Now, I’m not normally one who is really big into fads. And when I say fad, I mean a fitness trend that shows up, and then goes away just as quickly. Things like crazy diets or workout gear (shakeweight anyone?) that are just quick, gimmicky cashcrabs that don’t do anyone any good. But when it comes to healthy foods, I don’t see those as “fads”. We learn more about health food every day, but once we learn things it doesn’t really go away like some fad.

That’s why today I’m going to cover a few “trendy”  health food that are gaining popularity. We’ll discuss what they are, and a few health benefits of each.

Non-Meat Meats

Now this health food probably sounds a little strange, but stick with me here. Staying slim is a bit easier, in my experience, with less meat in your diet. Now, I’m not speaking for or against a strict meatless diet plan, but there are certainly some benefits that can’t be ignored. You should know by now that fruits and vegetables can undeniably help prevent some chronic diseases. More fiber and potassium in your diet can help ward off heart disease. Lack of refined carbs in these foods also help you against diabetes.

The biggest benefit I personally noticed researching this is fruit and veggie based diets and hypertension reduction. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health claims that diet rich in fruits and vegetables can significantly lower blood pressure. You shouldn’t take this lightly, either, as high blood pressure is a killer. High BP can lead to increased risks of stroke and heart disease, both of which are leading causes of death here in America.

To round this all out, veggie based meats such as veggie burgers can help increase the amount of servings you have each day. You need about eight or more servings a day to reduce your blood pressure according to research. So chowing down on some non meat meats will help you in your day to day without a doubt.

Turmeric

The next health food I’ll be discussing is actually a liquid. Turmeric is a golden yellow spice you can use in cooking, especially in curries. I’ve not had the chance to try some yet, but all signs point to this being a must have in your diet.

Turmeric is an infusion of dry turmeric powder or fresh turmeric root in milk. It’s used traditionally in Indian households for treating disease, and as a general health tonic. This drink is easy to prepare, and not hard on the tastebuds at all thanks to the milk reducing the acidity.

Turmeric’s most obvious benefit is it’s traditional use as a cough medicine. The drink is used to treat the symptoms of a cough, colds, and other throat infections by increasing mucus production to flush out the microbes that are in your system making you sick. Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that can help fight infections while relieving symptoms.

This drink is also a remedy for some digestive problems. Turmeric is regarded as an important culinary spice because of their ability to tackle digestive track issues. This drink improves digestion, helps relieve bloating, and gastric reflux. Turmeric can also prevent gastrointestinal infections, and is useful against parasites.

Finally, Turmeric is also said to be good as a beauty aid. The drink is said to cause visible changes in acne and reduce eczema. You can also use this drink to clear liver spots and skin eruptions.

Pea Milk

It’s getting easier every day for you to avoid dairy thanks to plant based milks. You can substitute cow milk for things like, almod, rice, hemp coconut, and now pea milk. Pea milk is the newest nondairy beverage to hit the shelves. The beverage is soy free, vegan, lactose, and gluten free.

Sure, it’s funny when you say “pea milk” out loud, but it’s definately taking the market by storm.

Thankfully the beverage doesn’t taste like actual peas, and isn’t made by soaking like almond milk. The peas are harvested and milled into flour before being processed. The protein from the pea is then purified and blended with things like water and vitamin B12.

You also get a large amount of protein per serving with this milk. When you buy Bolthouse Farms’ milk, you can get up to 10 grams of protein per serving! That makes this milk a great health food addition to your diet. It’s not usually obviously called “pea milk” and is instead marketed as “plant protein milk”.
