I Hate Valentine's Day

I Hate Valentine’s Day

I Hate Valentine’s Day

If you’ve mumbled “I hate Valentine’s Day” under your breath even once today, this goes out to you. Valentine’s Day can be a polarizing holiday. You’re not supposed to hate love, right? But if you’re cruising through the land of hearts and roses solo, you may be eye rolling your way through a particularly obnoxious Wednesday. If you’re in love and looking forward to the spoil-and-be spoiled celebration, the bah lovebug brigade may start to grate on your nerves. However, regardless of your romantic status, everyone can agree on this: today is an opportunity to be a little more loving, just because.

Be Loved

candle and wine

Whether you treat yourself to a day at the spa or indulge in a nice glass of wine, remind yourself that you are special. Download a new CD or light that candle you bought then threw in the back of a closet. You want a box of chocolate hearts, you go knock yourself out! Push yourself to the gym and get your New Year’s Resolution back on track. Whatever you chose to do, be mindful when you act. You can still binge watch RomComs and cry into a tub of ice cream if that’s your tradition, but do it with purpose. Tell yourself “I deserve to spoil myself too.”

Show Love

peace love happiness

Whether you’re a couple or a single, look to your list of family and friends. There’s someone you adore and today is the perfect day to remind them. It’s as easy as texting the guy that walks your dog to say, “I love how Fluffy perks up around you.” Thank someone for being a constant in your day. Call an old friend you haven’t talked to in ages. Make amends with someone you miss. Leave a bigger tip, or take a few seconds to smile and hold the door open for a stranger. Focus on making today special for someone. Everyone around you presents an opportunity for you to hate Valentine’s Day a little less. Peace and love really do add up to happiness for you and for others!

Speak Love

conversation hearts

Take Valentine’s Day back, old school style. I mean that literally. Remember those corny cards you delivered to your classmates? How about the conversation hearts your teacher handed out? Now grab a stickynote pad and get to work. When Jan from accounting returns from her coffee break to “You Rock!” you’ll have made her day. “Cutie Pie” stuck to the inside of the elevator will no doubt make someone grin. How about “You are beary special” left on a subway window? You have it in your power today to leave love everywhere. You never know when your words will matter the most.

You’re not the only person to exclaim I hate Valentine’s Day! Own it, but don’t wallow in it. Today doesn’t have to be a miserable day anymore than it should be just about romance (or Hallmark cards and expensive baubles). Whether you’re struggling to make Valentine’s Day special for someone else, or wrestling with feeling lonely, today can be a time for you to love a little harder.
