Mixed Martial Arts Travel: Learn and Relax at the Same Time

Mixed Martial Arts Travel

If you love to travel but also want to train it can be done. You don’t necessarily need to have deep pockets, although having a budget is not a bad idea. But training is hard to do even at home sometimes. It is even harder when on the road but Mixed Martial Arts travel is not impossible. In fact, it is quite easily accomplished if you plan correctly!

I am going to go over some of the martial arts styles I would train if I were in certain countries. You can make your partner happy and have a great martial experience at the same time. I will have some resources at the end of the article in case you need them.

Muay Thai in Thailand

Muay Thai is a combat sport based in Thailand. It is a very well rounded sport that is primarily a striking art, much like kickboxing.

The style allows punches, kicks, elbows, knees and they are famous for the “Thai clinch”.

Like most striking arts, the combatants sometimes get tangled up while standing. This is called a clinch.

Muay Thai practitioners are experts at getting out of this clinch as well as knocking people out from this position. With their knees and elbows at their disposal, it is not uncommon to see fighters actually make an effort to get into the clinch, rather than to fight at range.

My opinion is that Muay Thai is the core style for MMA because as striking styles are concerned,  that style uses the most weapons. It is also not uncommon to see Muay Thai fighters also use foot sweeps to knock their opponent down, another valuable asset for Mixed Martial Arts.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil

Brazilian Jiu Jistu or BJJ is a style that is used to defend yourself on the ground. The style has a number of techniques they can use to end a fight while underneath or on top of their opponent.

They also work on getting into a clinch situation while on their feet. Once they have the opponent in a clinch they will then bring them to the ground to finish them.

The techniques used to end a fight in BJJ are primarily chokes and locks that can easily break joints. Of course, they can also choose to get on top and rain down punches on their opponent.

Royce Gracie was one of the 1st famous BJJ fighters in the UFC. You can watch some of his videos to get a better understanding of how BJJ works.

Wrestling in Russia

Wrestling does not have any finishing techniques such as strikes or joint locks. What wrestling does bring to the table is intensity, conditioning and toughness for those who practice the sport.

Wrestlers are also excellent at controlling the range and pushing the pace of a fight.

The Russians have a long history of producing fantastic wrestlers in International competitions. They use a tough, gritty style well suited for mixed martial arts.

Of course the forte of any wrestler will be securing a takedown and conversely, not being taken down. The ability to dictate if you want the fight to remain standing or go to the ground is an enormous tactical advantage that cannot be underestimated.

Securing Mixed Martial Arts Travel

If you have the finances and time these three styles can really help your MMA game. In addition, there is something charming about going to another country to work with athletes who are at the top of the food chain in those styles.

If you are clever, you might be able to convince a spouse or significant other to travel with you. They can lounge all day at a nice hotel or resort while you train. Then when you get back you can take advantage of a nice massage at the spa or go see the country with your partner.
