What is the Aquaspace?
The Aquaspace is basically an observation boat that has a large underwater viewing area. My best description is that it is part trimaran and part submarine.
French architect, Jacques RougerieIt created it in 1978 and built it in 1982. Jacques Cousteau himself used the Aquaspace for studies on more than one occasion.
What is there to do on the Aquaspace?
We had the chance to do this excursion during one of our trips. First, you get taken out to a reef area while the crew tells you about the history of the trimaran and a little about the island.
As you are moving you are allowed to go down to the air conditioned observation station and check out the marine life and coral that you pass along the way.
Once at the reef area the boat will anchor and allow you time to snorkel.
The Crew of the Aquaspace
(Be sure to check out our Best Snorkeling in the Caribbean article as well as our Best Snorkel Mask article)
While it was apparent that the owners of the boat probably rotate crew, we had a brother and sister team as our Captain and guides. The pair spoke very good English and did a nice job of explaining the vessel while interjecting humor along the way.
Food was provided by the pair along the way and they even did some grilling once we anchored.
The Captain of the Aquaspace threw a little bread overboard to attract schools of fish towards the boat. You are able to see this fish from the top, the lower observation area and of course while snorkeling.
When you are done snorkeling you are treated to alcoholic refreshments should you want them.
Overall Impression of the Excursion
This was a fun trip for us and we enjoyed it for many reasons.
- First, how often do you get to snorkel off of a historic vessel?
- Next, you can have plenty of fun on deck even if you do not want to snorkel.
- Then when you do snorkel, you will find the water temperature to be very mild even in February.
- The crew is very friendly and professional.
I would highly recommend this snorkeling trip if you ever find yourself in Bonaire.
